About Us

We are proud to be ranked among New Zealand’s very best emergency management practitioners.

We harness our skills and experience to offer integrated, cost effective emergency preparedness and response services to high-risk, high-value industries – from complete solutions to staff training.

We have a proven track record in minimising business loss and ensuring production continuity through risk reduction, readiness for and execution of emergency response, and expeditious emergency recovery.

Decades of active service

EMS principals Alan Mycroft and Bob Durham offer businesses a depth and breadth of emergency response experience that is unparalleled.

Alan and Bob both joined the New Zealand Fire Service as young men in the early 70’s, and over the course of the next 30-odd years, served both on the front line as first responders and also in senior officer positions and training roles.

When Alan was contracted to establish an industrial Fire Service for a large corporation in Brunei, he asked Bob to join him. The two went on to run this expansive operation, protecting the business and its assets, for over 3 years.

Their experience includes setting up management systems, staff recruitment, liaison with civilian response agencies and statutory compliance requirements including testing regimes of various emergency equipment and procedures.

After returning to New Zealand, Alan and Bob continued their work in industrial Emergency Response, eventually winning the contract to become the dedicated Emergency Response Management team at Carter Holt Harvey’s Kinleith Mill .

EMS successfully restructured, rationalised and integrated Kinleith’s emergency first-response services, saving the company both in direct costs and in the reduction of losses through incidence.  Read more…

A highly trained team

Every operational member of EMS has a very high level of training as a minimum standard, enabling them to respond to emergencies in fire, hazardous substances, medical and security.  Training, up-skilling and practise is an everyday, ongoing commitment.

These qualifications include:

  • National Certificate Urban Fire & Rescue Operations Level 3

  • Pre-Hospital Emergency Care

  • National Certificate Security Level 2

Alan, Bob and the EMS team pride themselves on being highly skilled emergency response professionals and pragmatic, ‘roll-up-your-sleeves’ individuals.

Qualified to work with you

NZQA Accredited Training Providers

EMS are NZQA accredited to deliver a wide range of emergency response and health and safety training programmes.

CPNZ Endorsed

Contractor Prequalification New Zealand (CPNZ) is our country’s new pan-industry ‘seal of approval’ for contractors. New Zealand’s captains of industry now insist on CPNZ pre-qualification.

Contractors entering the sites of the CPNZ group of companies must be CPNZ pre-qualified. EMS was the first emergency response company in New Zealand to be pre-qualified to the new CPNZ best-practise standard, and achieved a very high CPNZ score.

IQP Approved

Alan Mycroft is an Independent Qualified Professional (IQP), giving EMS the ability to inspect, check, test and certify building specified systems listed on the building compliance schedule – such as fire detection systems, sprinkler systems etc. IQPs are also qualified to issue a Building Warrant of Fitness.

Active in our Industry

We are members of EMQUAL – the body that governs New Zealand’s Emergency Management Qualifications. Fellow members include the New Zealand Defence Force, New Zealand Fire Service, Royal New Zealand Coastguard, etc. We are one of only a few private organisations who are members.

We also members of and actively participate in:

  • Fire Protection Association NZ

  • Institute of Fire Engineers

  • South Waikato Emergency Services Coordinating Committee

We are committed to responsible business practices based on our values, policies and guidelines that are an important part of the way we work every day.We are also committed to contributing to and working closely with the communities in which we operate. We remain sensitive to the needs of local community and aware that how we operate affects the lives and livelihoods of those around us.

Many of our men and women come from the local community, and we proudly employ volunteer fire fighters.

In Tokoroa, where our team provide 24/7 emergency management services at Kinleith Mill, we are often first on the scene in community emergencies, such as road crashes on the busy highways that surround the town. We extend our security patrols to cover smaller businesses in the outlying area, and happily assist community organisations when asked.
